Franchise history
Pre 1970s: The Beginnings
The Padres have not won the World Series, ever. In fact, they have appeared in the World Series twice, and have won one game in it (against the Detroit Tigers in 1984).
The Padres adopted their name from the Pacific Coast League team which arrived in San Diego in 1936. That minor league franchise won the PCL title in 1937, led by then-18-year-old San Diegan Ted Williams.
In 1969, the San Diego Padres joined the ranks of Major League Baseball as one of four new expansion teams, along with the Montreal Expos (now the Washington Nationals), the Kansas City Royals and the Seattle Pilots (now the Milwaukee Brewers). Their original owner was C. Arnholt Smith, a prominent San Diego businessman and former owner of the PCL Padres whose interests included banking, tuna fishing, hotels, real estate and an airline. Despite initial excitement, the guidance of longtime baseball executive Buzzie Bavasi and a new playing field, the team struggled; the Padres finished in last place in each of its first six seasons in the NL West, losing 100 games or more four times. One of the few bright spots on the team during the early years was first baseman and slugger Nate Colbert, an expansion draftee from the Houston Astros and still (as of 2007) the Padres' career leader in home runs.

Based in San Diego, California, the San Diego Padres play in the National League West. The Padres joined the Major League in 1969, as a new expansion team. Their beginning was rather disappointing for the San Diego Padres as they finished in the last place of National League West in their first six seasons. Despite this poor performance as a team, the Padres were able to find a power hitting slugger, Nate Colbert, who hit 38 home runs twice in 1972. The late 70s saw the emergence of Ozzie Smith as the key player and the team’s records began to improve. The San Diego Padres won the National League Championship in 1984; and, in the 1987 season, Benito Santiago was awarded as the National League Rookie of the Year for hitting in 34 straight games. In 1998, the Padres won the National League West division title and then defeated the Astros to claim the National League Division Series and make their way to the World Series.
